At the UvA, you can take various career assessments, such as a work values test, career choice test, and competency test. Have you been employed for at least a year and are you seeking advice or support for your career development? ProActief UvA offers confidential career advice and assistance with any questions about new tasks, growth opportunities, dealing with supervisors, and work pressure.

Development opportunities

With the course finder, you can easily search for courses and training programmes for all UvA employees or for specific faculties. You are entitled to three development days per year—proportional for part-timers—for activities such as attending conferences, training sessions, courses, or short internships. For activities that enhance your career prospects, you may be eligible for study leave with continued salary payment.

‘The Effective Meetings course gave me concrete ideas to work with'

Bregje started a new role as programme director this year, which included various new tasks. Thankfully the UvA offers lots of training courses to help employees grow and develop their skills. As the chair of the Programme Committee she followed the 'Effective Meetings' course. 'It gave me concrete ideas for practices to make meetings effective but also more enjoyable. I definitely recommend.'
Her next training course will be Academic Leadership, which was recommended to her by a colleague. Another thing Bregje appreciates is the opportunity to work on aspects such as mindfulness. 'Sometimes it is difficult to prioritise things, but its incredibly important that these things are available for staff.' 

'I now have a wider view of what I'm capable of'

After 11 years as an event manager at the UvA, Martine was ready for a next step. 'I wanted to stay at the UvA, so I was given a recommendation to join the monthly Matching meeting, where I could pitch myself to HR advisers from all the faculties and units.'
Pro-Actief were on hand to help Martine prepare her pitch through a career trajectory course. ‘We focused on my skills and competencies: what am I good at? What do I enjoy doing?’ Martine was quite nervous before the Matching meeting. ‘It’s a little scary to present yourself to a group like this and to describe your skills and qualities out loud. But the group made me feel comfortable and responded really well. They recommended three vacancies that I could apply to which I never would have thought of on my own.
Martine has now taken the next step in her career and is working as assistant to the UvA ombudsperson.

'The UvA feels like home'

Eight years ago, Daniëlle exchanged a postdoc position in new York for a lecturing job at the Psychobiology. 'I quickly got involved in helping to organise the teaching, as well as policies and several education projects.'
"Eventually, I made a full transition to the position of education policy officer at the ESC of the FNW. But that was also five years ago. Now I'm at Nieuwe Achtergracht and it's my first week at the Faculty of Law (FdR) where I fulfil the same role: I support the education director and programme directors of the masters in their education policy. That's how I keep my work varied within this organisation."
