All about this vacancy

Your tasks

  • Cutting edge research, publications and participation in workshops and conferences in the field of empirical legal studies and/or law & finance and/or law & economics. Active contribution to the research community of the Faculty, connection across faculties and disciplines, and active participation in the seminar series and other research activities of the ACLE.
  • Teaching courses at bachelor and master level in the minor in Law & Economics, the minor in FinTech Law and Policy and the LLM in Law & Finance, PPLE, AUC or other BA and LLM or MA programs within the Amsterdam Law School or the Faculty of Economics and Business (not all of them, of course). Teaching includes some thesis supervision. Most of the courses we teach are interdisciplinary. The faculty regulations require new hires to follow a qualifying course for lecturers, which you will be expected to take.
  • A share of administrative tasks, which we try to run as efficiently as possible.

Required qualifications

  • A PhD in Law or related subjects with a focus on one or more of the following fields: empirical legal studies, law & finance, and law & economics. We intend these fields to be methodological approaches and we welcome a broad range of substantive research focuses.
  • Proven, high-quality interdisciplinary research output and exciting new projects.
  • Teaching experience and excellent teaching evaluations are appreciated, but we also encourage junior candidates without teaching experience to apply.
  • Team player, generous and friendly colleague, active seminar participant. English proficiency. Knowledge of Dutch not required for the application, but learning Dutch will be encouraged in the medium term.

This is what we offer

We offer a full time (38 hours per week) tenure-track contract starting from 1 September 2025 for the duration of 6 years, subject to periodic evaluations and tenure review in the 5th year. The contract becomes permanent if the candidate passes the tenure review.

Your salary, depending on your relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €4.537 to €6.209 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours, and increases automatically every year. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable.

Besides an attractive salary and an inspiring international work environment, our fringe benefits include:

  • 232 leave hours per year (at fulltime employment) and extra leave days between Christmas and 1 January;
  • 7 weeks of paid birth leave and partially paid parental leave;
  • the opportunity for hybrid working and support for your home office;
  • a pension with ABP, the pension fund for employees in the government and education sectors, to which UvA contributes two thirds.

Our members publish in the top EU and US journals (see the ACLE WP series on SSRN) and lead European and international research projects combining legal studies with methods from the social and computational sciences. The ACLE has an active research community of over 50 research members and research associates, an internationally-renown seminar, workshop and conference series.
