During the 4-year PhD, you will be part of a team which uses insights and methods from Experimental/Behavioral Economics and Neuroeconomics to study discrimination of groups and by groups. Using eye-gaze data and experiments, this research will investigate the influence of groups when deciding who should be hired or how to distribute scarce resources. You will be working as a PhD candidate for 38 hours per week over 4 years. Candidates with a strong research background in Experimental, Behavioral Economics, Neuroeconomics, but also Computational Psychology and related fields are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will have experience with running experiments, as well as strong programming, econometric and writing skills. Access to state-of-the-art research facilities will be provided via CREED (http://www.creedexperiment.nl/creed/), which houses several experimental economics laboratories and eye-trackers. PhD students often spend a half- to full-year visit at another internationally renowned school. The starting date of the position is September 2025 (with some flexibility).

This is what you will do

We are looking for an individual with a background in economics and experimental methods, who has a passion for doing research with societal relevance at the intersection of Economics,  Neuroeconomics, and Psychology. The position is part of the NWO Vidi grant exploring groups and attention. The position is based at the Amsterdam School of Economics under the supervision of Dr. Jan Hausfeld.

Tasks and responsibilities:

The PhD candidate will aim to generate research that can be published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals. Starting date: preferably September 2025.

Research (80%):

  • Design studies and experiments/interventions (e.g., lab or online experiments, eye-tracking)
  • Programming the experimental task (e.g. oTree, zTree, Matlab,…)
  • Collect and analyse data (R, STATA, Python)
  • Write the results up for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present the work at academic conferences

Teaching (20%):

  • Undergraduate tutorials

  • Supervision of Bachelor thesis projects

Your profile

  • MSc (Research Master) in (Behavioural) Economics, Neuroeconomics, Computational Psychology, Computer Science or related field (expected to finish by September 2025);

  • Openness to interdisciplinary research and approaches;

  • Advanced statistical and computational skills (e.g., R, Stata, Python);

  • Experience with designing and running experiments (e.g., OTree, Z-tree, Matlab,…);

  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written;

  • Good teamwork skills;

  • Explicit interest and motivation to conduct scientific research;

We offer full-time employment for the period of 4 years with a probationary period of 18 months, preferably starting from 01.09.2025 (in total, the contract will be for four years, fully funded).

The UFO profile ‘Promovendus’ (PhD student) applies to this position. This position is classified in scale PR. This means a gross monthly salary between € 2,901 and € 3,707 for full-time employment (38 hours per week), excluding holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (8.3%). The salary scale depends on competences and work experience. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.
