What does this job entail?

As a Junior Teacher, you will help in the preparation and organisation of seminars, computer labs, and projects for a range of courses in our programme. This will be done in consultation with the course coordinators who are responsible for the theoretical and course pedagogical implementation of a course. The tasks of a Junior Teacher consist of:

  • Assisting in running seminars and practical sessions focused on theory-based assignments or programming;
  • Supporting the training and guidance of Teaching Assistants (students) to ensure they are well prepared to supervise practical sessions, including through weekly meetings and clarification of course materials;
  • Giving feedback on weekly assignments;
  • Supporting with grading exams and assignments;
  • Maintaining the digital learning environment (Canvas);
  • Providing administrative support to course coordinators for lectures, practical sessions and projects;
  • Staying informed about quantum computing needed to fulfil your role accordingly.

You will contribute to multiple courses concurrently. The programme director will consult with you on course assignments, considering both your interests and areas of expertise, as well as the specific needs of the programme.

What do you have to offer?

  • You have a Master’s degree that is relevant to the field of quantum computing, for instance Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science;
  • You can demonstrate academic excellence and mathematical maturity, for instance good grades for relevant courses;
  • You can demonstrate that you are interested in quantum related topics, for instance by having taken several courses related to quantum theory;
  • You have excellent English skills (verbal & written);
  • You are eager to dive into the ins & outs of quantum computing to be able to assist with several courses within our programme;
  • You work well independently and as part of a team.

Additionally, it would be a huge asset if you have prior experience as a teaching assistant.

What can we offer you?

We offer an employment contract for 4 years (with a 2-month probation period) for 38 hours per week, preferably starting on August 1, 2026.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between €3,546 to €5,538 (scale 10) .This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile Docent 4 is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.

Please note! It is not possible to offer this contract to candidates who currently, or in the past 6 months, have (had) employment with the University of Amsterdam, apart from Student Assistants and PhD students. Your possible application will not be eligible for consideration for this reason.

The Faculty of Science offers you a four-year contract, which includes 0.1 FTE dedicated to training and development. This combination of working as a Junior Teacher while following training is called the Lecturer Development Programme (Docent Ontwikkel Programma, DOP). The purpose of the DOP is to optimise your position on the job market (employability and career opportunities) once your temporary employment comes to an end. During your four-year contract, you will follow training modules together with other Junior Teachers; this will include the opportunity to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO). Together with your supervisor, you will draw up a Personal Development Plan (Persoonlijk Ontwikkelplan, POP) detailing the specifics of your customised programme.
