The University of Amsterdam invites applications for a D3 Lecturer (PhD level, or soon to be completed) to contribute to the Dual Master Archival and Information Studies, in close collaboration with the BA Media & Information, and the MA Cultural Data & AI programmes – three uniquely connected programmes that position the humanities at the forefront of digital transformation.
We are seeking an enthusiast and education-driven scholar with expertise at the intersection of archival studies, media studies, and data/AI-driven cultural analysis. The successful candidate will contribute to interdisciplinary teaching, curriculum development, and supervision of students’ internships, theses and/or embedded research projects.
You will teach and develop courses that bridge theory and practice, ranging from archival concepts and methodologies, coding in digital humanities, to data-driven and AI-based approaches in cultural data. The teaching is closely aligned with professional discourse and practice, in Amsterdam and internationally at esteemed institutions and grassroots initiatives.

The AIS team: You will be working within a diverse team of lecturers and researchers from various backgrounds (archival studies, digital humanities, decolonial studies, and heritage). Together we prepare students for a growing professional practice in governmental institutions and heritage organizations involved in recordkeeping (from museums, to design studios). We critically question and probe these practices rather than teach how to be an archivist in a practical sense. Our international students in the Dual Master are selected, highly motivated and some come to us to obtain the necessary diploma for specific archival functions. Due to the small number of students, there is a strong sense of connection and loyalty between students and lecturers. Within the team, you are given ample freedom to (co)develop the teaching in line with proven insights.
The Media Studies Department
The AIS team, together with 5 other teams, forms the Media Studies Department. It is one of the largest departments of the faculty, where PhD students, researchers, and academic and practice-based teachers work closely together. Due to the international character of the department, the working language alternates between Dutch and English.
About the Faculty of Humanities
The Faculty of Humanities encompasses a wide spectrum of progressive education and research. From the historical heart of Amsterdam, it maintains intensive contacts with many partners in culture, society, and business. In this way, it is part of a humanities hub of international stature.
