The Faculty of Science is opening a prestigious MacGillavry Fellowship position in the broad theme of Computational Science & Sustainability. We are asking female researchers who have a strong track record in Computational Science, AI, and Informatics, and at the same time have the potential and ambition to obtain a leadership position as (associate/full) professor at the University of Amsterdam to apply.
MacGillavry Fellowship
The Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam attaches great importance to the contribution of female scientists in research and education. For this reason, we are continuing our prestigious recruitment programme for talented women, the MacGillavry Fellowship programme named after the groundbreaking crystallographer professor Carolina MacGillavry (1904-1993), an alumna of the University of Amsterdam.
Computational Science & Sustainability
The Informatics Institute at the University of Amsterdam is seeking to hire a highly motivated Assistant Professor in the broad area of Computational Science and Sustainability to join our team. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Computational Science Lab at the Institute.
The Computational Science Lab develops computational models of real world phenomena and uses simulation to advance understanding of the complex adaptive systems that shape our society and environment. We seek a Computational Scientist whose research tackles challenges related to sustainability in any of its many dimensions.
The potential scope of the Tenure Track position is broad, but the candidate should preferably align with ongoing research at the Computational Science Lab, focusing on Modelling and Simulation, Complexity Science and connect to the theme of sustainability.
The candidate is expected to contribute to education at the institute and play an important role in the Master Complex Systems and Policy, the Master of Computational Science a joint degree programme of the UvA and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
The tenure tracker is expected to acquire his/her own independent funding from sources such as the Dutch Science Foundation, the European Commission and Industrial Partners.

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week with a tenure track agreement for the duration of 5 years (which is part of a 5 year temporary contract). The arrangement is such that after a maximum of three years and positive assessment and evaluation you will be offered a permanent position while the track continues towards the level of associate professor. The preferred starting date is as soon as possible. You will be offered a permanent position after positive assessment and evaluation.
The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 4,728 to € 6,433 (scale 11). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile UD 2 is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.
We also offer a startup package that includes a PhD position and sufficient bench fee as well as a dedicated leadership mentoring programme that includes:
We are actively committed to creating a workplace where issues of equality, diversity and inclusion are at the forefront. In particular, the diversity committee is pursuing several initiatives designed to support early-stage academics, particularly female academics, in their career progression.

The Faculty of Science has a student body of around 8,000, as well as 1,800 members of staff working in education, research or support services. Researchers and students at the Faculty of Science are fascinated by every aspect of how the world works, be it elementary particles, the birth of the universe or the functioning of the brain.
The mission of the Informatics Institute (IvI) is to perform curiosity-driven and use-inspired fundamental research in Computer Science. The main research themes are Artificial Intelligence, Computational Science and Systems and Network Engineering. Our research involves complex information systems at large, with a focus on collaborative, data driven, computational and intelligent systems, all with a strong interactive component.
You will be embedded in the Computational Science Lab (CSL), part of the Informatics Institute. CSL aims to make dynamic complex systems tractable through mathematical and computational modelling and simulation. The group consists of researchers who together a broad range of dynamical systems in fields including biomedicine, urban environments, socioeconomic systems, coral growth, and the human immune system. Being interdisciplinary in nature, the group has many interactions and collaborations with other research groups and institutions as well as a wide range of stakeholders (public and private).
