The College of Communication is looking for a proactive, approachable, and engaged student to take on a combined role as Ombudsstudent (Student Liaison) and Education Desk Assistant within the Communication Science programmes. Both roles focus on supporting students and enhancing the overall student experience. As Ombudsstudent, you act as a bridge between students and the College of Communication (responsible for the bachelor’s programmes) by gathering student feedback, raising concerns, and contributing ideas to strengthen an engaged academic community. As Education Desk Assistant, you support current and prospective students by answering questions and providing clear information about the bachelor’s and master’s programmes.

What are you going to do

Your responsibilities include:

Ombudsstudent tasks:

  • Advising the College of Communication on student-related matters, both proactively and upon request;
  • Identifying student needs and concerns and helping to develop appropriate solutions;
  • Maintaining contact with study associations and the Faculty Student Council, and participating in meetings of the Programme Committee and Board of Studies;
  • Organising the Buddy Programme, pairing senior students with new students;
  • Supporting projects and events such as alumni surveys, student focus groups, introduction days, graduation ceremonies, career and community events, and the upcoming accreditation of the programme.

Education Desk Assistant tasks:

You will staff the Communication Science Education Desk for one 5-hour shift per week, carrying out tasks such as:

  • handling student inquiries via email, phone, and live chat;
  • providing information to prospective students about the bachelor’s and master’s programmes;
  • preparing and issuing documents such as grade transcripts and graduation statements;
  • supporting educational administration and assisting in the organisation of events such as graduation ceremonies and information days.

What do you have to offer

  • You are a Communication Science (Bachelor’s) student at the University of Amsterdam and are actively involved in student life, easily connecting with students from all years and both tracks of the programme;
  • You are aware of what is happening among students and actively contribute ideas for improvement;
  • You recognise nuance in complex situations, engage constructively with fellow students, and handle confidential information with care;
  • You take a proactive, solution-oriented approach to addressing issues and remain calm when dealing with complaints or tensions;
  • You work both independently and in coordination with others when needed;
  • You are able to prioritise tasks, maintain overview, and stay effective during busy periods;
  • You are accurate, flexible, stress-resistant, and work in a result- and customer-oriented way;
  • You have experience with MS Office;
  • You communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing; proficiency in Dutch is preferred.

Your place at the UvA

In this department, you will work

You will be part of both the Education Office team and the College of Communication, which are responsible for the organisation and quality of the Bachelor’s programme. You will collaborate closely with the Education Office team, policy adviser, study advisers, Director of Education, the Master’s Ombudsstudent, and the Communication & Events team of Communication Science. Your main points of contact are the policy adviser and the Education Desk team leader.

You will organise your work flexibly. You are expected to be on campus at least one day per week (REC C, 7th floor) to staff the Education Desk and to attend meetings of the College, the Programme Committee (OC), and the Board of Studies.
