The successful candidates will be part of a team of researchers at the Research Centre for Longevity Risk. The centre is a joint initiative of the Amsterdam School of Economics and Nationale-Nederlanden and based at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Amsterdam. The focus of our research is on developments in survival rates and life expectancy, how these developments are affected by a variety of factors, and how an increasing life span affects the economy and wider society. To strengthen our research on the management of longevity risk we are looking for a new team member who can contribute to our research on pricing and hedging of longevity risk.

Your research will include the development of mathematical methods for pricing and partial hedging in incomplete markets. Research experience and expertise in a relevant area such as incomplete markets and utility indifference pricing will be highly appreciated but are not a requirement. Only candidates with a strong background in Actuarial Science, Econometrics, Statistics, (Applied) mathematics or related fields are encouraged to apply. What you will do

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Research on pricing and reinsurance of longevity risk
  • approximately 20% of your time will be spend on teaching courses at the Amsterdam School of Economics 

What we ask of you

The candidate will aim to generate research that can be published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals, and will also be expected to communicate implications of the results to a broader audience of policy makers and society as a whole.

Your experience and profile:

Formal requirements:

  • Applicants must have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD degree in Actuarial Science, Econometrics, Statistics, (Applied) mathematics or related fields.

Task-related requirements:

  • Excellent English language skills, ideally with experience in writing for a scientific audience;
  • Willingness and motivation to independently formulate research projects and carry them through to completion;
  • Mathematical skills and command of standard software packages for implementing of optimization algorithms, and a willingness to develop these skills further;

Additional requirements:

  • Strong motivation to pursue an international career as a leading scholar;
  • Strong commitment to methodological rigor and scientific integrity;
  • Energy and passion for researching solutions for modern challenges
  • Intellectual curiosity, eagerness to learn, and openness to criticism.

What we offer you

We offer full-time employment for the period of two years with a probationary period of two months, preferably starting If proven suitable, an extension or permanent employment is possible. The UFO Onderzoeker 4or 3 applies to this position. This position is classified in scale 10 or 11. This means a gross monthly salary between € 3,546 and € 6,433 for full-timeemployment (38 hours per week) excluding holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (8.3%). The salary scale depends on competencies and work experience. The collective bargaining agreement of Dutch universities applies.

The UvA has an extensive package of fringe benefits, including:

  • 29 days' holiday with full employment & extra holidays between Christmas and the New Year;
  • Excellent work (from home) facilities;
  • reimbursement of commuting expenses;
  • pension accrual with ABP;
  • In addition, the UvA offers excellent study and development opportunities and encourages employees to continue their professional development;
  • You may participate in the open UvA lectures with which you can earn up to 30 credits per year.
