Are you looking for a postdoctoral position in political communication research? Are you interested in media, inequality, and democratic attitudes, and would like to become an expert on the topic? Then this position is for you!
The Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) is the research institute for the Department of Communication Science at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. We seek a postdoc for the Horizon Europe-funded project “EDGE: Enhancing Democratic Support under Conditions of Geographic and Intersectional Inequalities in Europe”. This postdoc position is part of an international, interdisciplinary consortium. This position is fully funded for 30 months and part of the Political Communication & Journalism programme group.
Across Europe, rising inequalities are often accompanied by growing dissatisfaction with democracy. EDGE looks not only at objective inequalities (such as income or regional disparities), but also at how people perceive and experience that they are being disadvantaged. These perceptions are often linked to resentment towards elites or outgroups and can have important consequences for democratic support. The project sees this resentment as a key link between actual inequalities and how people experience them, and focuses on how people assign blame.
At the University of Amsterdam, we focus on the media component of EDGE. We investigate how journalistic content and digital information environments (e.g., social media) frame inequalities, assign responsibility, and contribute to perceptions of fairness, inclusion, and legitimacy.
You will be part of a large international and interdisciplinary consortium, collaborating with researchers in political science, sociology, and related fields. You will take a leading role in the media-focused work packages, also in terms of authorship on publications. Your responsibilities include development and design of empirical studies, data collection and data management as well as writing and data analysis. You will directly work together with the project leaders, Dr. Kathleen Beckers & Dr. Katjana Gattermann, who are based at ASCoR. There will be excellent opportunities for intellectual growth and mentoring. The project envisages funding for workshops, conferences, and opportunities for developing a strong academic network.
