REM-Lab is an ICAI (Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence) lab, a joint initiative between the University of Amsterdam, the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) and DPG Media. Together with a team of PhD researchers, university supervisors, and DPG's engineers, we work on responsible news applications.
As our Research Engineer, you make sure the lab's insights don't stay inside the lab. You turn the methods and results developed here into open, usable artifacts that reach the academic community, industry peers, and the wider public. You are the person who ensures the impact of the lab goes beyond academic conferences.

As our Research Engineer, you make sure the lab's insights don't stay inside the lab. You turn the methods and results developed here into open, usable artifacts that reach the academic community, industry peers, and the wider public. You are the person who ensures the impact of the lab goes beyond academic conferences.

This is what you will do
You take the ideas that come out of the lab and give them a life outside it. Working closely with our PhD researchers, you turn promising research into software and datasets that other people can actually pick up and use. Examples of possible projects include an open library for explainable news recommendation and building a Dutch news dataset that becomes a resource for the whole field.
The lab brings together academic and industry partners, and keeping that collaboration working takes active effort from everyone involved. Clear communication and a willingness to reach out are important here.
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Turning the lab’s research methods into open, well-documented libraries and tools that others in academia and industry can adopt
- Building and releasing shared datasets that become lasting resources for the research community
- Working with PhD researchers to bring their research to the outside world, through reproducible code, publishable results, and tools others can build on
- Contributing to scientific publications together with the lab’s researchers
What we ask of you
You enjoy writing code that other people will read and use, and you take care to leave things in a state someone else can pick up. You are comfortable reading an academic paper and working out what it would take to make it real. When priorities shift between the academic and industry sides of the lab, you stay flexible and keep the work moving. You communicate openly with researchers and engineers alike, and you ask questions when something is unclear.
Your experience and profile:
- MSc in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field
- Strong coding skills, with an eye for software that others can reuse and maintain
- Ability to read academic papers and translate them into working code
- Motivated to work at the intersection of academia and industry
- Professional command of English.

This is what we offer you
We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week for a period of 12 months. The preferred starting date is as soon as possible.
The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 3.537 to € 4.673 (scale 8). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile O&O 3 is applicable. For this position we cannot sponsor a visa. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.

We work on search engines, on recommender systems, and on conversational assistants.
