The Research Priority Area (RPA) Shaping Interfaces Between Science and the Public at the University of Amsterdam aims to strengthen the interaction between science, citizen science, social debate and various professional practices. The challenges of the future require scientifically informed policies and equipped citizens. But how do we align science, policy and society? How do we involve the public in scientific debates about complex issues such as quantum, mental health, climate change, and the responsible use of new technologies, such as generative AI? How do we collaborate with the public in scientific research to generate new knowledge or understanding? And how do we communicate the different scientific methods, including their possible shortcomings, to the public? The RPA brings together UvA methodologists and philosophers of science and technology from fields as diverse as psychiatry and mental health, human rights, and the digital humanities. The RPA is a collaboration between the faculties of Humanities, Law, Science, Social and Behavioural Sciences, and the faculty of Medicine at Amsterdam UMC.
The RPA is housed at the Institute for Advanced Study and is coordinated by the Faculty of Humanities. The Scientific Coordinators are Huub Dijstelbloem, Claudi Bockting, Rens Bod, Denny Borsboom, Yvonne Donders, Selin Gerlek, Sebastian De Haro, and Sonja Smets.
