Working at the UvA

Join us!

The Department of Political Science is looking for junior lecturers to teach tutorials and assess student work in our bilingual Bachelor's programme.

All about this vacancy

What are you going to do

As a junior lecturer, you will teach tutorials for first- and second-year students, covering academic and methodological skills as well as core topics in political science. You will be involved in various courses in the first and second year of the programme in English and/or Dutch.

Tasks include:

  • Teaching Dutch- and/or English-language tutorials in various Bachelor's courses, with a focus on academic and research skills.

  • Mentoring first- and second-year students.

  • Assisting in grading assessments for large-scale lecture courses.

  • Providing additional grading or teaching support for colleagues as needed

What do you have to offer

You enjoy mentoring the next generation of students. You are a team player, strong communicator, flexible, and able to manage peak workloads in education.

Additional requirements:

  • You hold a completed BSc and MSc in Political Science. A BSc in Political Science from UvA is a plus. A strong profile with only an MSc in Political Science is also acceptable. Candidates with a completed PhD are considered overqualified.

  • You have demonstrable knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

  • You are interested in, and preferably have experience with, teaching, mentoring, and coaching.

  • You possess strong didactic, social, and organizational skills.

  • You have broad and up-to-date knowledge of political science, making you suitable for teaching in various parts of the Bachelor's programme.

  • You have excellent oral and written communication skills in both Dutch and English.

We value diversity within our team of junior lecturers and aim to reflect the diversity of our student body. We strongly encourage candidates from groups currently underrepresented in academic teaching to apply – for example, in terms of gender, ethnicity, colour, sexual orientation, or other minority backgrounds. In addition, we strive for a balanced representation of Dutch- and English-speaking staff members.

What do we offer you

We offer a stimulating and interdisciplinary working environment with varied tasks and ample room for individual initiative and professional development – within an inspiring organization. Working at the University of Amsterdam means working in a dynamic, independent, creative, innovative, and international environment with an open atmosphere and strong engagement with society and the city of Amsterdam.

This is a temporary position for four years, with a two-month probationary period, for 0.8 FTE (30,4 hours per week). A smaller appointment is negotiable. Within this role, 10% (3 hours per week) is reserved for personal development.

The Junior Lecturer Development Programme (DOP) offers junior lecturers the opportunity to teach while following courses and training that prepare them for the job market after the position ends.

The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,378 to a maximum of €5,331 gross per month (based on a 38-hour workweek, Dutch Universities scale 10.0–10.12) of the CLA Dutch Universities. The start date is August 21, 2025.

UvA also offers an attractive package of secondary benefits, including generous vacation days and a thirteenth month. There are also excellent opportunities for further study or personal development.
