The Department of Media Studies is looking for fixed-term Lecturers to teach in the Media Studies BA programme, specifically in the track Cultural Information Studies. Lecturers who have a PhD may also be asked to teach courses in the related Master’s programmes Cultural Data & AI and Archival & Information Studies.

Candidates should have considerable knowledge of the study of Critical Data Studies and/or Archival Studies in the humanities, especially in the areas of computational research methods, AI, and/or critical archival studies. They will also have demonstrable affinity with media theory, AI ethics and cultural data analysis. Practical experience in working analytically with cultural data sets (cultural heritage data, social media data) and computational tools is desirable.

Successful candidates will be a member of the subject team for Critical Data & AI.

This is what you will do

Lecturers will teach mainly in the bachelor's degree in courses concerned with such topics as data journalism, media theory, digital practices, digital methods and information analytics, media history as well as contemporary themes in digital culture, all in the program of Media and Information. With a PhD, Lecturers also may also teach in the Master’s degree program and supervise theses.

Tasks and responsibilities
Under the supervision of a course coordinator, you will be teaching in the Media Studies BA programmes, specifically in the track Cultural Information Studies. Your tasks will comprise: teaching seminar groups;

  • teaching seminar groups;
  • marking assignments, papers and/or theses, providing input on tests and test questions, entering marks;
  • attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and developing course materials or assignments according to relevant teaching methods, working in collaboration with colleagues and the course coordinator;
  • coordinating practical matters relating to your own seminar group[s] (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
  • supervising theses (Bachelor’s and [with a PhD] Master’s) and providing other individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and/or supervising internships).

This is what we ask of you

  • minimum qualification: a research-oriented Master’s degree in Media Studies or a related discipline;
  • if teaching in a related Master’s programme, you have a PhD in a relevant field;
  • teaching or teaching-support experience at university level, specifically in Media Studies;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with ICTs in academic education;
  • basic knowledge of Python is desirable;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the New Media team;
  • willingness and ability to collaborate in teaching teams;
  • administrative experience and skills;
  • University Teaching Qualification, or willingness to acquire it within two years;
  • ou are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to foster students’ understanding, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
  • You are able to teach in English.

This is what we offer you

We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30,4 hours a week. Preferred starting date is 01 August 2025.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between € 3,378 to € 5,331. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
