T.M.C. Asser Press is the publishing house of the T.M.C. Asser Institute, based in The Hague, an interuniversity research institute for international and European public and private law affiliated with the University of Amsterdam (UvA). T.M.C. Asser Press offers a platform for academic collaboration through the publication of books, scientific journals and digital (online) publications. The English-language book titles of T.M.C. Asser Press are produced and distributed in collaboration with SpringerNature and are therefore available worldwide. The varied publishing portfolio includes a number of renowned yearbooks, book series in fields such as international criminal law and international sports law, and highly regarded academic journals such as the Hague Journal on the Rule of Law and the Netherlands International Law Review.
Due to the retirement of the current publisher, we are looking for a publisher for T.M.C. Asser Press to lead the publishing house and the editorial team of three employees, who are active in editing articles, in the production process and in selecting case law in the field of private international law. The publisher is responsible for the profitable production and marketing of various media in the field of international and European law. The ideal candidate has excellent communication and organizational skills. The position also requires the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and to work in a team. Due to the changing market, knowledge of and experience with developing online products is an advantage. To further expand the network to universities, affinity with the academic world is desired. The publisher reports to the managing director of the T.M.C. Asser Institute.

All about this vacancy

This is what you will do

  • Acquiring (book) projects and contracting authors from the designated fields;
  • Evaluating project proposals and organizing the peer review process;
  • Coordinating and working smoothly with internal departments, as well as with the departments at the external publishing partner SpringerNature such as production, marketing and sales;
  • Building and maintaining a network of good relationships with academics from Dutch and international law faculties;
  • Further (and new) development of book series, scientific journals and online media;
  • Representing the publishing house at international conferences;
  • Achieving annual publication and revenue targets.

What we ask of you

  • Completed (master's) degree in Law or a related field;
  • Excellent written and oral command of both the Dutch and English language;
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks;
  • Be able to work independently and work together smoothly in a team environment;
  • Is enthusiastic, energetic and has a creative mind that strives for innovation;
  • Knowledge of (international) online distribution and distribution in the Netherlands (e.g. Centraal Boekhuis);
  • At least 5 years of work experience as an acquiring editor, publisher or a similar position.

This is what we offer you

  • We offer an appointment for 38 hours a week, initially for the period of one year with a probationary period of two months, and with the intention of converting into permanent employment. Extension of the appointment is subject to satisfactory performance in this period. Considerations of a financial and/or organisational nature may give rise to not convert to permanent employment.
  • The starting date ideally is the 1st of January 2026.
  • To this position applies UFO profile ‘Redacteur (1) / Projectmanager (3)’ and salary scale 12. Remuneration depends on the actual level of education, experience, and knowledge, and amounts to a minimum of € 5.705 and maximum of € 7.297 gross per month for full-time work, excluding a holiday allowance (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%). The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten) is applicable.
  • A temporary reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch candidates.
  • You will be employed by the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Law, but seconded to the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague.
  • Only candidates with permission to work in the Netherlands will be considered.
