This interdisciplinary project develops an infrastructure that enables students and researchers in the social sciences and humanities (SSH) to systematically examine current and emerging public debates on crucial societal issues in the Netherlands. The project is funded by the Platform Digital Infrastructure of the Dutch SSH-council and developed in a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the University of Groningen (RUG), SURF, the National Library of the Netherlands (KB), and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (NISV). The project is led by Prof. Julia Noordegraaf.

We are looking for an assistant to support the project in its final year. This means you will be involved in setting up the program of, plan and implement an academic event in all its details, and liaise with participants. In addition, you will also support the work of our PhD students in the project.

All about this vacancy

This is what you will be doing

As an assistant in the Twi-XL project, you will be involved in tasks relating to the finalization of the project as well as supporting out PhD students. Specifically, you will:

  • support the organization of our final event, planned for September/October 2025
  • support the computational analysis of tweets and TV transcripts for a PhD project on public discourse about sexual misconduct

This is what you will be doing

  • You have excellent communication skills in oral and written English, you are also proficient in Dutch (at least level B2).
  • You enjoy organization and time management tasks, and have some experience in event planning or coordination.
  • You are okay with analysing difficult content, including racist, discriminatory, and/or misogynistic texts; you have an interest in feminist and/or postcolonial theory.

This is what we offer you

We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of 9 months with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 12 hours a week. The preferred starting date is as soon as possible - 1 April 2025 at the latest. Your salary, depending on your study year, ranges between €2.925 to €2.981 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

The team that you will mainly be working with includes the PI, and the coordinator; in addition to the team members located at the UvA, you will also work with the core team of Twi-XL including colleagues at SURF, the University of Groningen, the Institute of Sound and Vision, the Dutch National Library, and e-Science Centre. We are now in the last year of the project, focussing on finalizing the project and design the end product. The final event is meant to advertise this end product and initiate more discussion about infrastructures and archiving of digital data as one of the major societal challenges to date.
