You will conduct research on Management Information Systems and the section’s or school’s focus areas (business analytics and/or information systems). You will teach Management information systems courses. The focus will be on courses in the new MSc in Business Information Technology Management.

Tasks and responsibilities:

• Conducting Research Projects related to Management Information Systems and the section’s or school’s focus areas (business analytics and/or information systems). Time dedicated to research activities will be around 50% of total working time;

• teaching Management Information Systems courses, including managerially focused courses (on IS core theory), as well as more hands-on both Python-based and low-code/no-code app development labs at the bachelor and master levels. The focus will be on courses in the new MSc in Business Information Technology Management. The candidate is also expected to supervise around 10 master thesis projects. Time dedicated to teaching activities will be around 50% of total working time;

• for tenured staff, there is the expectation to apply for governmental and industry funding for these research projects. At the tenure level, we expect the candidate to participate as a team member for applications led by more senior colleagues.

You will be working as Assistant professor in Management Information Systems

As assistant professor of Management Information Systems, you will be part of the department of Business Analytics as the University of Amsterdam. Some of the things our department has to offer:

The ideal candidate has (research) expertise in Management Information Systems but is also comfortable engaging with research in business analytics, statistical learning, AI, machine learning, and/or mathematical optimization. While their core expertise may be in Information Systems, they should be able to collaborate with colleagues working on technical aspects of analytics, optimization, and AI, bringing a broader business perspective to these domains. Candidates are expected to publish in top-tier Information Systems journals while also contributing to interdisciplinary research within the Business Analytics section.

The assistant professor:

• has a PhD in (Business) Information Systems from a department in (Technical) Business Studies;

• ideally has 1 to 3 years of experience at the assistant/professor level; We also encourage applicants with less experience (fresh PhD graduates) who have a strong research profile to apply;

• has the potential to publish articles in international top-tier IS journals (including the AIS Senior Scholar basket of journals);

• has an interest in teaching and is eager to develop excellent teaching skills;

• has a demonstrated ability to attract research grants and/or industry-sponsored projects is highly desirable, though early-career candidates with strong potential in this area are also encouraged to apply;

• possesses a relevant international academic and industry network;

• has some managerial experience in teaching and research.

The successful candidate will teach courses that balance managerial and technical aspects of Management Information Systems for business-oriented students in Digital Business and Business Analytics programs. This includes both conceptual courses on Management Information Systems theory and strategy as well as more hands-on courses, such as low-code/no-code app development labs. Candidates should be comfortable teaching students with diverse backgrounds, from those seeking deep technical expertise to those more focused on business applications.

We offer full-time employment, preferably starting from September 2025 (the starting date is flexible). The appointee will initially be offered a five-year temporary tenure-track contract as an assistant professor, and after satisfactory performance, a permanent contract will be offered.

The UFO profile Assistant Professor applies to this position. This position is classified in scale 11. This means a gross monthly salary between € 4,537 and € 6,209 for full-time employment (38 hours per week), excluding holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (8.3%). The salary scale depends on competencies and work experience. A 5-year substantial reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch candidates.
