We are looking for a PhD student to work on the topic of shape analysis for medical imaging, tailored for deep learning. The high-level goal of the project is simple: to use anatomical knowledge and existing knowledge as training data for deep neural networks (instead of manual annotations). The research will be conducted within the qurAI group (see description below), focused initially on musculoskeletal applications, but open to others by collaborating with fellow PhD students. At the intersection of different sub-fields (applied mathematics, software engineering, and medicine), it is expected to refine the scope and goals of the project with the selected applicant, depending on technical skills and personal interests.

Tasks and responsibilities:
The ideal candidate has a curious mind, is independent, and shows attention to details. The ability to select and adapt existing methods for the current task in the most efficient manner is a core skill needed. Moreover, good communication skills, with various stakeholders of diverse background, is paramount.
Required experience and skills:
Nice to highlight in your application (if applicable):
A temporary contract for 38 hours per week for the duration of 4 years (the initial contract will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it will be extended for a total duration of 4 years). The preferred starting date is to be discussed. This should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). We will draft an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. We also expect you to assist in teaching undergraduates and master students.
The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 3,059 to € 3,881 (scale P). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile PhD Candidate is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.
Besides the salary and a vibrant and challenging environment at Science Park we offer you multiple fringe benefits:
Curious about our extensive secondary benefits package? You can read more about it here.
